A walk through our Vigna Saeculare, the centennial vineyard, is an immersion into the history of viticulture on Mt. Etna; an extraordinarily high concentration of ungrafted vines, with some of them planted more than two centuries ago. Each of the generations before ours has left us vines which are still perfectly healthy. The classic Etnean varietals, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Alicante: we transform them into a wine intended for long aging. Its first vintages are still waiting for the moment we find them fit to bottling. Saeculare lies in the shadow of an amazing stone pyramid, which has been built over centuries with the only purpose to get the stones removed from the vineyard out of the way. This kind of constructions is part of the viticultural landscape on Mt. Etna, and we have decided to invest in the conservation of this landscape: the restoration of Vigna Centenaria’s “torretta” sums up everything we intend when we call us The Guardians of Etna’s Vineyards, I Custodi delle vigne dell’Etna.
